Figura típica de la contradictoria y a la vez espléndida Italia del Renacimiento, Baldassare Castiglione (1478-1529) emprendió la redacción de El cortesano, libro imprescindible para comprender los ideales renacentistas, en 1508, en la brillante corte ducal de Urbino reunida en torno a Guidobaldo de Montefeltro e Isabel Gonzaga,
si bien lo concluyó ya fuera de ella, diez años después. La obra, que no vio la luz en forma impresa hasta 1528, un año antes de la muerte de su autor, acaecida en Toledo siendo ya súbdito del emperador Carlos V, está dividida en cuatro libros o diálogos que tratan distintas cuestiones bien sintetizadas por Ángel Crespo en su magnífica introducción. Su lectura, que se ofrece en este volumen en la admirable traducción de Juan Boscán, mantiene hoy en día, como poco, un doble valor: por un lado, ofrece un retrato inigualable de un ambiente, de un pensamiento, fundamentales para la civilización europea, pero además brinda de forma constante a lo largo de sus páginas ejemplo de tolerancia —los personajes que en él intervienen no tratan nunca de imponer una solución o un criterio ni de erigirse en maestros—, virtud que cinco siglos después de su redacción parece continuar figurando entre las asignaturas pendientes de la sociedad moderna.
