Two different translations can feel like two entirely different books. Tolstoy wrote French for some of the passages for War and Peace. This translation is ideal because it sticks as closely to the text as possible. I've seen other sites do similar things with Pevear and Volokhonsky's War and Peace translation. Pevear/Volokhonsky's War and Peace transformed the book, which I had read several times before in the Maude translation. When Pevear and Volokhonsky translated it, they kept the French with the English translation as a footnote. Well, that was the first time I had really seriously looked into War and Peace at all, and as I poured over the four or five different versions of the novel on the shelf, I couldn't figure out which translation was the "best. For the first time, I understood Andre -- he'd seemed like such a prig before. I have been thinking about adding Dumas to the Classics Challenge, and I might have to try the Pevear translation. She sometimes gets knocked by uncharitable who think she's "too Victorian" to really get Tolstoy; however, if you compare the Volokhonsky/Pevear translation of Anna Karenina with my girl Connie's, you'll see that the V/K's owe her a pretty big debt. I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.
